The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
